Safe energy storage
for decades

The Vanadium Flow Battery is a proven technology for safe, scalable and long-duration energy storage.

How does a Vanadium Flow Battery work?

A Vanadium Flow Battery consists of three main components.

Electrolyte tanks

Two liquid electrolytes contain dissolved active materials that store energy.

Stack

The stack is the electrochemical heart of the system. This is where the exchange of electrons takes place during charging and discharging.

Pumps and control system

An intelligent control system manages the circulation of the electrolytes and optimises system performance, efficiency and operating life.

During charging, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy and stored in the electrolytes. During discharge, that energy is converted back into electricity for the grid, building or energy system.

Power and capacity can be scaled independently

Unlike conventional battery systems, a flow battery stores energy in liquid electrolytes held in external tanks. This makes it possible to scale power and storage capacity independently — a major advantage for applications requiring many hours of energy storage.

Need more power? Increase the stack capacity.

Need more storage duration? Increase the electrolyte tank capacity.

This makes the technology particularly suitable for applications where several hours of energy storage are required and where storage capacity may need to grow over time.

Advantages

Why choose Vanadium Flow?

Exceptionally long operating life

The systems are designed for more than 20,000 full charge and discharge cycles without significant loss of capacity. The electrolyte itself can in principle be used indefinitely.

Higher efficiency

Self-consumption increases from 30% to 80%, with a significantly lower levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) than lithium-ion due to its long service life.

Independently scalable

Power and storage capacity can be scaled independently, allowing the system to be configured around the specific energy profile of the application.

High safety

Vanadium Flow Batteries use water-based electrolyte solutions and are inherently non-flammable. This significantly reduces fire and thermal runaway risks associated with conventional lithium-ion technologies.

Sustainable and serviceable

Individual components can be replaced or serviced without replacing the entire energy storage system, helping to extend the useful life of the investment.

Turn-key & complete European solution

Typical applications

Grid congestion

Store electricity when grid capacity is available and release it when the grid is under pressure.

Energy trading

Store electricity when prices are favourable and discharge when market conditions are more attractive, where applicable.

Industrial energy systems

Manage high demand and provide additional flexibility for industrial operations.

Data centres

Support critical infrastructure and provide additional energy resilience.

Renewable energy

Store solar and wind energy for use when renewable generation is lower.

Pose your question

A vanadium flow battery is an efficient way to store electrical energy as chemical energy through redox reactions. Its core consists of stacks of cells, while the energy is stored in two tanks containing a liquid vanadium-based electrolyte.

It is fully fire-safe and explosion-safe. Because the vanadium flow battery is water-based, it is non-flammable and the risk of explosion is negligible. The system is also silent in operation and produces no COâ‚‚ emissions.

The battery can be fully charged and discharged more than 20,000 times without loss of capacity. In principle, the electrolyte has an unlimited service life and is fully reusable.

Power output and storage capacity can be scaled independently. The smallest systems start at 2 kW and scale up to 16 kW, with larger energy storage systems ultimately reaching several hundred kW.

Thanks to its exceptionally long service life, the cost per kilowatt-hour is significantly lower than that of lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the flow battery can be fully discharged, is fire-safe, and is environmentally friendly.
