Circular battery for Phoenix Metals

On 25 September, Power Storage Solutions delivered a vanadium redox flow battery to Phoenix Metals in IJmuiden. The battery, a Volterion Energy FB, has a power output of 20 kW and a storage capacity of 140 kWh. Phoenix Metals is developing a hydrometallurgical process to recover vanadium and other valuable metals from industrial residual streams, including steel slag from Tata Steel Nederland. Part of the electricity required is generated by solar panels. The battery will enable this energy to be stored and used more efficiently. As the battery also uses vanadium, recovered vanadium can ultimately contribute to new energy-storage applications, creating a robust circular value chain.
